Possible Outing Notice

I wanted to alert Green Thumbs Members to the possibility of doing an outing together – either by road trip or air travel. Swarthmore College (near Philly) in PA has a plant conference every year. It’s a one-day affair (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and is very well done. Last year’s was on trees; this year’s is on Perennials. I attended a conference there a couple years back, and it was wonderful! Two snack breaks and lunch are included; and, if you register before September 17th, the cost is only $99. (After Oct. 8th, it is $129). I am planning to attend the conference this year and would love for any of you to attend as well. It would require a night or two of hotel (depending on your mode of travel), but there are many inexpensive hotels in the area – like the Fairfield Inn, Comfort Inn, etc.

Longwood Gardens is a very short drive from Swarthmore and if you’ve never been, it is a MUST see!! You can check both the conference (perennialplantconference.org) and Longwood Gardens out on the web. I lived in Yardley, PA for a few years and enjoyed Longwood on several occasions – I always love going back! Another option is to fly into DC, rather than Philly, – it’s about a 2.5 hr. drive to the conference/Longwood. From Philly it’s only about 15 minutes to the conference and about 45 min from Longwood. I’ll be staying with my daughter in Alexandria, VA and will drive to the conference from there. If you need a ride from DC, let me know!
